A SIP — Structural Insulated Panel — is a single factory-manufactured element comprising a sealed PUR or EPS insulating core between two OSB faces. One product, two functions: the panel both carries and insulates. That paradigm shift is why a SIP shell stands in 8–12 weeks while built-in insulation reaches a U-value of roughly 0.15 W/m²K — near-passive-house performance.
We make the SIP choice on three engineering parameters — none of them aesthetic. Schedule first. Panel manufacturing runs in parallel with slab construction, so the full shell stands in 8–12 weeks. A traditional reinforced-concrete-and-block house: 5–6 months. Then energy. Built-in U-value of a SIP wall is lower than what a traditional brick assembly with separate insulation can deliver. Third, construction precision. Panels come off the line at millimetre tolerances, so on-site assembly does not absorb the cumulative drift typical of trade-by-trade construction.
On the line, an industrial press bonds the two OSB faces to the insulating core. The polymer adhesive outlasts the panel itself. Panel sizes are CNC-cut to the project drawings — openings, conduit runs, and connection details all built into manufacture. The panel arrives on site ready to install.
"No joints" practically means thermal, acoustic and vapour behaviour are uniform across the full surface. In traditional brickwork, the mortar joints create thermal bridges; in a SIP wall, the bonded connections are tight.
A single-storey, 140 m² family home's full SIP shell typically stands in 2–3 weeks. A two-storey, 240 m² house: 4–6 weeks. On the 12-unit Budakeszi Sparta House development we assembled panels in three-unit blocks, so the full 12-unit shell stood in 16 weeks — a traditional reinforced-concrete development would have taken at least eighteen months for the same scope.
The SIP decision sits at the intersection of schedule, energy and construction precision — never on a façade impression.
SIP is not a universal answer. For larger structural loads (5+ storey buildings, industrial column halls) reinforced concrete or steel is the right call. A hybrid — SIP on the façade planes and lighter floors, reinforced concrete in the load-bearing cores — is often the most efficient combination. SIP is the right choice when schedule, energy performance, and long-term running costs matter to the client. It is not, when the program's structural demands exceed panel capacity, or when traditional reinforced-concrete or block construction matters to the client for cultural or moral reasons. We weigh that choice together at the first consultation — always on engineering grounds, never on ideology.
